Despite Crowe being inherent to the first plastic film ’s success , a subsequence with him would not have worked given Maximus ' fate . Any agency of wreak Maximus back would degrade the impingement of the persona ’s sacrificeand the windup of his satisfying arc inGladiator . There were earlier iteration of a subsequence that involved Maximus ignite in the underworld and encountering mythological beings before being resurrected , which could have allowed Crowe to remain at the forefront of the franchise .
This would not have do work , though , as it would undermineGladiator ’s unadulterated endingand be a jarring switch to a mythological storey . As Scott indicated , the simple and most obvious room to continue the story was to instead sharpen on Lucius , and what becomes of him and Rome after the events ofGladiator . Despite being a lineal sequel , Gladiator II ’s cast is missing several significant surviving grapheme from the original 2000 film .
Lucilla ( Connie Nielsen ) and Senator Gracchus ( Derek Jacobi ) retort from the previous film will also helpGladiator IIfeel like a proper sequel . Unlike Maximus , their characters live , and can still charm the story of Lucius , along with Rome ’s ongoing political shift . Gladiator IIwill feel dissimilar without Croweand might sputter to live up to the heights of its predecessor , but there was no viable continuation with the doer , and therefore , no need for Scott to confer him .
