Robert Picardo had a major influence on some of the best aspect ofStar Trek : Voyager , include his character ’s kinship with Seven of Nine ( Jeri Ryan ) . As two of the most popular members ofVoyager ’s dramatis personae of character , Seven and the Doctor were the subject of many instalment throughout the show . In a television interview withThe Companionfrom 2022 , Robert Picardo explained several aspect of his influence on the Doctor ’s character duringStar Trek : Voyager ’s run , including his relationship with Seven . While discussing their initial conversancy , Picardo revealed that he was the one who pitch toVoyager ’s originative team the idea that the Doctor should instruct Seven about humanity , specifically to author and producer Brannon Braga , who was on instrument panel from the beginning . “ take the relationship I had with Kes and flick it so that the Doctor has the ego to opine he ’s a good instructor of how Seven should domesticate her Humanity than a tangible Human would seem to have a lot of comical possibilities . I specifically suggested we could have playact exercises in which I would teach her appropriate behavior under different societal situations . "
Since Seven replaced Kes ( Jennifer Lien ) after she leftVoyager ’s casting , it seduce sensory faculty that Picardo would be root on to flip the relationship the Doctor had with Kesand go for it to the newfangled extremity of the work party . Part of what made the two characters so compelling together was that they were the quintessential odd couplet , with Seven ’s deadpan demeanor and straightforward attitude balancing out the Doctor ’s more imaginary and garrulous personality . However , if not for their student / teacher dynamic , Seven and the Doctor might not have had much to do with each other at all , form it such a blessing that Picardo come across their voltage .

Jeri Ryan and Robert Picardo are also both phenomenal actors , and seemed to find kindred feel in term of balance each other out in scene . The Doctor and Seven ’s give and take as the navigated conflict , friendship , and even romantic undertone was truly a pleasure to watchasVoyagerprogressed , and a lot of credit should be give to Picardo and Ryan for their as nuanced execution . Seven and the Doctor may not be one ofStar Trek : Voyager ’s most democratic relationships , but they remain one of the show ’s best regardless .
